South of France: Food, food, beaches and a bit more food

We are leaving Nice and heading East on the coast, towards Èze, Monaco and Roquebrune.  But in the meantime – we inserted a beach day as long as we still had good weather. It was an existing problem, you will see on the Èze photos, the third day we woke up to the sound of rain…

If you decide to visit the French Riviera one day, DO NOT go in September. Unpredictable weather might ruin your plans.

But picking up from the still hot and sunny day, after leaving Nice we just kept stopping to take photos as couldn’t take our eyes off the astonishing villas and spectacular scenery of Villefranche.

Getting to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, we headed to Paloma Plage (below) straight away. It was impossible to park anywhere, so just a warning, go there in the morning, otherwise you will spend an hour keep hoping someone would leave.

Very pretty beach, clear waters, not sandy but it has a special atmosphere, we kept staring at the villa built right next to it. No jealousy whatsoever…

After getting bored we walked down to the harbour to see if we can grab something to eat… We sat down at this little place that couldn’t even be called a restaurant, more of a little buffet with plastic chairs, there was nothing classy in it. BUT the bruschetta... (8 euros) the fresh ingredients and simplicity… Outstanding, the most delicious food of the trip. Now that I am looking at the photos the place is called ‘Bar de la Mer’! Definitely a place to go back! Haven’t even mentioned the olive oil, which was a massive bottle filled with chilis, bay leaves, rosemary, cloves, oregano and who knows what else, those were the only spices I could recognize from the bottle. Again – not a special or groundbreaking idea… But the QUALITY of the ingredients just made everything wonderful.

Back to the beach where we did some snorkeling… Barely saw Greg all afternoon, he didn’t take his head out of the water! It was not a productive day at all, but as usual the beach can tire you out easily, so quite early in the evening we found a campsite by the beach and had dinner… Now thinking back, we were just swimming, sunbathing and eating all day. Probably the only lazy day during the whole trip though. For dinner, did the shopping in a Carrefour, where I literally wanted to spend 4 hours just looking at cheeses and hams… So this is what we put together for dinner and for breakfast and lunch for the next day too.

The avocados – being the star of the table – they were so smooth, creamy and full of taste… Thank God Greg is not fond of avocados! A baguette, selection of cheese and ham, olive and sundried tomato paste, olives, tomatoes and some wine we chose. Even though it was recommended by one of the guys who worked there, it was SO sweet, we could only drink it with water… True sad story. IMG_1167
All in all, it was one of the most exciting days, not in terms of activities but regarding food…
